7 Quick Takes - 07/03/09

  1. Finally we have sun! This whole week has been dreary and cool. Temperatures have only been in the sixties for the most part and I don't think we saw the sun all week. Also, we had that kind of drizzly rain that makes everything just uncomfortable. I am so glad to see the sun. Right now it is just trying to peek out from the clouds; hopefully it will be going full force this afternoon.
  2. Salads made with freshly picked lettuce and tomatoes are just wonderful. 4th of July tomatoes are one of the varieties we grow at the farm. The name gives you an idea of when they might be ready. Well, they made it this year. They aren't huge slicing tomatoes but are bigger than the cherry tomatoes with good flavor. I love tomatoes and it is nice to finally taste on after all these months of doing without.
  3. Continuing the food theme, I just made a couple of banana cakes and boy do they make the house smell good! Add some cream cheese frosting after they cool and hopefully they will taste as good as they smell.
  4. And speaking of tomatoes, check your plants if you bought them from a big box store. Late blight has been found on the East Coast. Late blight is what caused the potato famine in the 19th century; this story tells all about it and gives some of the warning signs.
  5. I am just plain tired of both the Mark Sanford and Michael Jackson stories. Mark Sanford should just learn to keep his mouth shut and while I did like some of Michael Jackson's music, enough already.
  6. The Cubs still stink. I mentioned this earlier in the season, in April I think. Things haven't changed much. One of the things about being a Cubs fan is that you get used to that. I think they are doomed to fail every year, whether it's due to the Billy Goat curse or not. On the bright side, they won last night.
  7. Hopefully we will be having our first cookout of the season on Sunday. It has been way too cool and rainy to do anything sooner. Also we needed to replace our grill. Right now it looks like hot dogs on the grill with kohlrabi slaw and maybe some baked beans. Yum!

Take heart - being a baseball fan is not unlike marriage; that is, "for better or for worse". :>) We're intending to catch an Omaha Royals game tonight and then a Lincoln Saltdogs game tomorrow night - I'm betting I'll prefer the Lincoln game! Better stadium for sure.

We've had enough sun that my Indian corn is taller than I am, I think! But it looks like I'm going to have to give up on peas. I pulled a few tiny carrots, but they won't be ready by next week like I'd initially hoped. At least there isn't anything all that important riding on my garden - you can have all the sun you need and I'll take the cool weather! (if only it worked that way . . .)

I had never thought about the marriage analogy for baseball before - you're right!

I would love to have a lot of sun for the crops but I don't handle the heat well. However with enough fans I can put up with the heat.
